Lemosho route is an unspoiled,remote,little-used,
and beautiful way to the Shira plateau.Above the
plateau,you approach kilimanjaro’s great western
breach,then follow the circuit to reach the
easier Barafu Route.
Day 1: Moshi (915m/3,000ft) to Londorossi
Gate (2,250m/7,380ft)to the Lemosho Glades
(2,000m/6,560ft) to Mti mkubwa
camp(2,750m/9,020ft)8km 3-4hours mountane
Drive from Moshi or Arusha to the londorossi
park Gate,from here follow a forest track in a
4x4 vihecle sharing for 11km(45 minutes to
Lemosho Glades and possible campsite from the
Glades,walk for 3 hours along beautiful forest
trails to the Mti mkubwa (Big tree) campsite.
Day 2: Mti mkubwa Camp(2,750m/9,020) to Shira
1 Camp (3,500m/11,485ft)16km, 9-10hrs semi
The trail gradually steepens enters the giant
heather Moorland zone,then crosses the Shira
Ridge at 3,600m/11,810ft and drops gently to
Shira 1 Camp located by a stream on the Shira
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m/11,485ft) to
Shira 2 Camp (3,840m/12,600ft)13km 7-9hrs.
A gentle walk across the plateau leads to Shira
2 Camp on moorland meadows by stream.A variety
of walks are available on the plateau marking
this an excellent acclimatization day.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp(3,840m/12,600ft) to Lava
Tower (4,630m/15,190ft) to Barranco Camp
(3,950m/12,960ft)7km 4-6hrs Semi-desert.
After breakfast, you will hike east up
steepening parth above the highst vegetation
kilimanjaro’s looming mass.After several hours
you walk through a rocky landscape to reach the
prominent landmark called Lava Tower at 4,630
m/15,190ft.This chunky reminant of kilimanjaro’s
earlier volcanic activity is several hundred
feet high, and the trail passes right bellow
it,for extra credit the sure-footed can scramble
to the tower.After a lunch stop near Lava Tower
descend for 2hrs.
Below the lower cliffs of the western breach and
breach wall to Barranco Camp at 3,950m/12960ft
there are numerous photo opportunities on this
Barranco camp to Karanga Camp elevation
(13,000ft to 13,100ft)5km hiking time 4-5
hrs,Habitat Alpine desert.
After breakfast we leave Barranco Camp and
continue on steep ridge passing the Barranco
wall to the Karanga valley camp site.This is a
short day meant for acclimatization.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp,Elevation(13,100ft
to 15,300ft) 4km hiking time 4-5hrs Habitat
After breakfast,we leave Karanga and hit the
junction which connects with the Mweka trail.We
continue up to the Barafu Hut,at this point you
have completed the south circuit,which offers
the views of summit from many different
angles,here we make Camp, rest, enjoy dinner and
prepare for the summit day.The two peaks of Kibo
and Mawenzi are to be seen from this position.
Day 7 Barafu Hut to Summit to Mweka
Hut,elevation (15,300ft to19,345ft)and down to
10,000ft,5km ascent/12km descent,Hiking time 7-8
hrs ascent/4-6 hrs descent,Habitat Artic.
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am),we
continue our way to the summit between the
rebmann and Ratzel glaciers.You head in a
northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy
scree towards Stella point on the crater
rim.This is the most mentally an physically
challenging portion of the trek.
At Stella point (18,600ft) you will stop for a
short rest and will be rewarded with the most
magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see
weather permitting).From Stella point you may
encounter snow all the way on your 1hour ascent
to the Summit. At Uhuru peak,you have reached
the highest point of mount Kilimanjaro and the
continent of Africa.Faster hikers will see the
sunrise from the summit.
From the Summit, we now make our descent
straight to the Mweka hut Camp site,stoping at
Barafu for lunch.Mweka Camp is situated in the
upper forest an mist or rain can be expected in
the late afternoon. Later in the evening we
enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a

After breakfast,we continue the descent down to
the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit
certificates. At lower elevation, it can be wet
and muddy, Gaiters and trekking poles will
help,Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty
